Amiya sets meet record as Orissa win 6 medals on Day Two

PHOTO: File photo of Amiya Kumar Mallick Orissa sprinter Amiya Kumar Mallick set a meet record in under-18 boys’ 200 metre sprint event of the 21st National Inter-Zonal Junior Athletics Championship at Punjab University ground in Chandigarh today. Bhubaneswar teenager Amiya clocked 21.93 seconds to win the gold medal as well. Orissa athletes bagged three more gold and two bronze medals on the second day of the three-day championship to increase their overall collection to 15 medals, which cincluded six golds, three silvers and six bronzes. Sprinter Dutee Chand, hurdler Dharmedhar Mahanta and the boys-20 relay (4x100m) team claimed the other three gold medals of the day, while the two bronze medals were secured by hurdlers Purnima Hembram and Anil Kumar Das. Orissa results: Girls-16: Dutee Chand (Gold in 200m run, 24.88s). Girls-18: Purnima Hembram (Bronze in 100m hurdles, 15.54s). Boys-18: Amiya Kumar Mallick (Gold in 200m run, 21.93s): Anil Kumar Das (Bronze in 110m hurdles, 14.78s). Boys-20: Dharmedhar Mahanta (Gold in 110m hurdles, 14.22s): Orissa-A comprising Rabi Das, Subhasis Nayak, Rajendra Toppo, Dharmedhar Mahanta (Gold in 4x100m relay, 42.57s).
